People hear the word Epilepsy and imagine someone who is on the floor, shaking uncontrollably and expecting the person’s head to spin around like the girl in the movie “The Exorcist“. Luckily, people with Epilepsy cannot spin their head around 360 degrees. Today, I am here to share facts about epilepsy.
Fact #1: Epilepsy has been around since 2000 B.C. It was officially diagnosed 126 years ago as epilepsy.
Fact #2: Epilepsy has affected many famous people, from composers, musicians, inventors, actors, singers and the list goes on and on.
Fact #3: Epilepsy is very serious and not to be taken lightly. It is the 3rd leading neurological disease ahead of Alzheimer’s and strokes. It can cause death in some cases.
Fact #4: 1 in 26 people are diagnosed with epilepsy, it does not discriminate and currently there is no cure.
Fact #5: Epilepsy is not contagious and in few cases, is hereditary. Do not expect everyone who is suffering from epilepsy to have a long lineage of family members with epilepsy. In some cases, it is caused by head trauma, brain tumor, brain infection or a stroke.
Fact #6: Epilepsy is a condition, it is not a disease, illness or sickness. There is a big difference between these 4 categories.
Fact #7: There are over 40 different types of seizures associated with Epilepsy.
Fact #8: November is Epilepsy Awareness Month, March 26 is Epilepsy Awareness Day.
Fact #9: It affects 50 million people worldwide.
Fact #10: Memory loss accelerates when a person has more and more seizures over the years. Sometimes speech is affected, but it does not make us slow.
